The municipal town of Bunyola lies partly in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, and although just 15km north of the capital Palma it is still nevertheless a very quiet and traditional town that has lost none of its old world charm and slow, languorous pace of life. As befits its location, the municipality of Bunyola has ten mountains within its area, the highest of these is Rateta at 1,118 metres and the lowest is Puig de S´Estremera at 277 metres. For those wishing to visit Bunyola by car, the main Ma-11 Palma to Soller road, does run less than 1km to the west of the town, making it quite a short journey from the centre of the city. Given its close proximity to Palma, the town is also easily accessible by rail. If you do happen to be visiting from Palma then letting the train take the strain is heartily recommended. The Palma to Soller (Tren de Sóller) service stops in Bunyola town several times a day and is a lovely way to visit the area. It is a real treat to sit in one of the vintage brass and mahogany carriages that are a trademark of the train, whilst admiring the breathtaking scenery en-route. This area has always been a very prosperous part of Mallorca, and at the foot of the mountains, some of the grandest buildings on the island have been built. Large traditional Majorcan manor houses abound, with notable examples being those at S’Alqueria, Biniforani, and Sa Font Seca.
