Best restaurants in Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca’s 10 Michelin Stars of 2018

Mallorca, Spain has become a fine dining destination of divine proportions in recent years and 2018 sees it retaining all of its 10 Michelin Stars in the annual awards! The fact that this utterly charming island is smaller than the county of Devon, puts its delicious achievements into context.

The Guía Michelin de España y Portugal’ published the 2018 edition of its famous red book in November 2017, paying tribute to 9 top restaurants in Majorca and the 10 coveted Michelin Stars that they have been awarded overall.

Top of the list with 2 Michelin Stars in Mallorca  is Zaranda’, the restaurant owned by Chef Fernando Pérez Arellano. Originally based in Madrid, he moved his exquisite restaurant to the 5 star Castell Son Claret Hotel in Es Capdellà, a picturesque mountain village at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range, in between Calvià and Andratx in the south west of Mallorca. When asked what inspires Chef Arellano, his answer isMallorca’s traditional cookbooks and recipes’. His food is a fusion of delectable flavour, aroma and texture and has seen him maintain the two Michelin Stars for another year. Complete with an outdoor terrace for an ‘al fresco’ Mediterranean dining experience, his menu consists of four tasting menus ‘To Discover’, ‘To Taste’ ‘To Enjoy’ and ‘To Experience’. Chef Arellano’s food is of exceptional creativity with perfect wine pairings to boot and offers the element of surprise as well as true, heavenly, mouthwatering satisfaction.

Next on the Michelin Star restaurant award list in Majorca is ‘Restaurant Marc Fosh in the capital city of Palma. This fine eatery serves ‘Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on clean flavours and seasonal ingredients’ and can be found in the 17th century Hotel ‘Convent de la Missió’ in the Old Town, Palma. Chef Fosh’s lunch menu is surprisingly good value considering its Michelin Star accolade, with three courses for under 30 euros. His dinner menu in Palma offers three tasting menus, one of which is vegetarian. Marc earned his first Michelin Star in 2014.

Es Moli d’En Bou Restaurant, Sa Coma, Mallorca earned its first Michelin Star back in 2004 and is now entering its 15th year in succession of this honour! ‘The Bou’ is under the mastery of Tomeu Caldentey who delivers his own spin on traditional Mallorcan dishes and declares you “forget about anything you have experienced before in a restaurant. Come with no preconceived ideas. Don’t think that you will be seated at a table exclusively. ‘The Bou’ experience is very different.”

Es Raco d’es Teix Restaurant, Deia, Majorca run Josef Sauerschell, was awarded its first Michelin Star back in 2002. German born Sauerschell is as passionate about traditional Mallorcan ingredients and cooking as he is his family and has proudly become an honorary Mallorcan. His restaurant enjoys fine views of the mountainous landscape of Deia and offers a three course set lunch menu, A’ La Carte menu, an exquisite tasting menu in the evening and his deserts are renowned for being simply irresistible!

Buenos Aires born Adrián Quetglas comes from a Majorcan bloodline and is passionate about this island and its cuisine. He trained in London, Mallorca, Moscow, and Paris. After a decade of producing fine food in Moscow, Adrián has returned to the island to open his restaurant Adrián Quetglas, on the Passeig de Mallorca in Palma near the famous Avenida Jaime III. He has clearly made a definite impact on the island, earning his restaurant a Michelin Star in 2018. He serves a reasonably priced lunch time ‘Urban’ five course menu at noon and a 7 course Taster Menu in the evening, with pairing wines.

Es Fum Restaurant in the St. Regis Mardavall Resort in Costa D’en Blanes is led by Chef José Miguel Navarro. Awarded its first Michelin Star in 2011, it has retained one ever since. Es Fum offers a Seasonal Menu and a 10 course Taster Menu, constructed from some of the finest local ingredients, to produce authentic Spanish cuisine. His stand out dish of 2017 was his ‘tartar of red prawns with crispy beetroot ‘bread’ and ginger vinaigrette’.

Dining on the outdoor terrace overlooking the lush green landscape, the turquoise Mediterranean sea beyond and heavenly island sunsets, is an experience to truly behold.

Situated on the seafront, Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca brings Argos Restaurant at the adults only hotel La Goletta del Mar to the Michelin Star club. Known for their seasonal, local products, their cuisine in in keeping with traditional Balearic home cooking. Chef Álvaro Salazar leads the kitchen at this restaurant. One of 10 previous finalists in the San Pellegrino Young Chef competition in 2015, the presentation and flavour of his Mallorcan dishes are truly something to savour. Awarded his first Michelin Star in 2017, his stand out dishes include 12 hour slow roasted suckling pig, Japanese Sunomono, and his infamous ‘Sexy’ dessert.

Andreu Genestra started in the industry straight from school. He has trained under many renowned chefs including Marc Fosh and in places such as London, Stockholm, Brazil, Moscow, Paris and Miami and in Kuwait, where he worked for the Royal Family. After deciding that he wanted his own restaurant, he opened Andreu Genestra Restaurant in Hotel Predi Son Jaumell, Capdepera, Majorca, which offers  views of Capdepera Castle from its terrace. Andreu earned his first Michelin Star in 2015 and has since gone on to open his second restaurant Aromata in the city of Palma. His passion for quality and fresh ingredients is clear. He grows his own organic fruit, vegetables, herbs, vines, olives, and Mallorcan ‘xeixa’ wheat, which he uses to make the bread. He collects fresh eggs from his chickens and rears his own pigs. During his winter, he travels and collects spices which feature in his dishes.

Last, but by no means least on the 2018 Michelin Star list in Mallorca, is Restaurant Jardín in Alcudia. Part of the de Castro family gastronomy empire, Macarena de Castro was the first female chef in Mallorca to be awarded a Michelin Star in 2012, which she has maintained at Restaurant Jardin, ever since. Breathing fresh air and bringing renewed life into traditional Mediterranean and Mallorcan dishes, Macarena is passionate about less popular fish, tasty cuts of meat and offers “a tasting menu, from the heart of the island.” With a regularly changing menu, some of her authentic Spanish taste creations in the past have included fried sea anemone, velvety smooth gazpacho, meaty lobster and ‘tarta de lemon pie’.

For an island small in size, Mallorca is big on flavour and very proud to have been awarded 10 Michelin Stars in 2018.
